Former EPA Official Urges Cooperation in MSW Management

E-mail Print PDF

This Op-Ed piece in the March/April 2010 issue of MSW Management Magazine by Rick Brandes, recently retired as Chief of the Energy Recovery and Waste Disposal Branch, Office of Resource Conservation and Recovery, of the U.S. EPA, constituted a powerful argument for the passage of AB 222, which would have expedited the introduction of 21st Century conversion technologies for the production of advanced biofuels, electricity and other products from organic wastes.  To read his commentary entitled, "Cooperation, Not Conflict: Municipal Solid Waste Management in the 21st Century," CLICK HERE. (Please note that AB 222 addressed only non-incineration, non-combustion technologies.)

Union of Concerned Scientists Advocates the production of Advanced Biofuels from Solid Waste

E-mail Print PDF

In June 2010, the Union of Concerned Scientists published a comprehensive study on the need for second and third generation biofuels production in America.  Entitled "The Billion Gallon Challenge," the study strongly advocates the production of ethanol from municipal solid waste.  On page 37, it even profiles two of the California based companies--Fulcrum BioEnergy and BlueFIre Ethanol, that would have benefitted from the passage of AB 222.  Both of these companies have elected to construct their initial solid waste-to-biofuels plants in other states--Nevada and Mississippi.  To read the entire report, CLICK HERE.

Sierra Club, Worldwatch Institute Declare Urgent Need for Advanced Biofuels

E-mail Print PDF

Smart Choices for Biofuels, a 16-page report from the Sierra Club and Worldwatch Institute declares the “urgent need for a major shift to more-advanced biofuels to prevent negative effects on the climate, land, soil, water, air, and rural economies.” The report specifically includes thermochemical technologies in that definition. It says that "Nearly all studies on the role of biofuels in mitigating global warming and boosting energy security have concluded that 'second-generation' (or 'advanced') biofuels, which rely on non-food feedstocks and offer dramatically improved energy and greenhouse gas profiles, are necessary to make wider use of biofuels feasible worldwide." CLICK HERE to read the complete report.

AB 222 Endorsed by three California Regulatory Agencies

E-mail Print PDF
Before it was gutted and destroyed by the Democrats on the Senate Environmental Quality Committee, AB 222 had been endorsed by three of California's top regulatory agencies. Their letter of support was signed by Jim Boyd, Vice-Chair of the California Energy Commission (and Chair of the Governor's Interagency BioEnergy Task Force); Margo Reid Brown, Director of CalRecycle (formerly known as the Integrated Waste Management Board); and Mary Nichols, Chairperson of the California Air Resources Board. CLICK HERE to read this compelling statement of support.

The Recycling Market in America Today

E-mail Print PDF

Is it better to be sending California's recyclables to the Far East for processing and sale back into the United States, or to convert these materials into advanced biofuels and green power here at home? The market for the export of recyclables is in economic disarray and no environmental (emissions) standards exist for the work that is being done abroad.
